MTAs host a number of specific\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003ehabitat types and species protected by the Habitats Directive, especially habitats of\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003ethe open landscape, which developed through and rely on an extensive (often historical)\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eagricultural use, a disturbance regime (of the military training) and \/or specific\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003econservation measures. Many important habitats of EU community relevance,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eespecially those requiring oligotrophic to mesotrophic conditions, have some of their\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003ebest and largest representation on military areas and thus have been integrated into\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003ethe Natura 2000 network of protected areas. Most of these habitat types and species\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003ehave an unfavourable conservation status at the biogeographical level. Actively used,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eas well as decommissioned, MTAs play an important role in maintaining or improving\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003ethe conservation status of several of these habitat types and species.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis volume presents the proceedings of the workshop “Management of Natura 2000\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003esites in Military Training Areas”, which was held by the German Federal Agency\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003efor Nature Conservation from 28 September to 1 October 2015 at the International\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAcademy for Nature Conservation at the Isle of Vilm (Germany). The workshop\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003ediscussed the specific conditions for the management of open landscapes on active\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eand former military training areas (Natura 2000 sites).
